Red Eyed Dog

This experience happened to my dad when he was at Ralph and Linda’s house; friends of the family.

My dad told me that this event occurred only days before I was born. He was visiting Ralph and Linda because he needed a break from my mom, and anyone who has been around a heavily pregnant woman knows why he needed a break…..

He said that it was evening, not quite night and not daylight. He went outside to smoke his pipe, because he wasn’t allowed to smoke inside. Dad told me that the evening was quiet, there were no cars in the area, and the sky was bright with the early stars. As he described it, I would imagine it to have been quite beautiful.

He said that something came running up beside the house. It was a large dog, like a Labrador but much larger. Dad said it looked him right in the eyes, and its eyes were red. He said that he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. The eyes almost glowed, and the dog had a growl to match. Dad also said that the “dog” had a bone-chilling growl.

He said the worst part was that it just disappeared right in front of him. He didn’t tell anyone about the experience until I was about 13 years old.

According to many legends, to tell people about seeing a black dog spirit will bring their death if mentioned within 7 days, weeks, or years of seeing it. My dad wanted to make sure it was safe and waited well beyond the 7 years. Normally black dogs are omens of bad things to come.

Dad said that either the next day, or the day after that was when my mom went into labor, and he thought that I was going to be the bad thing. He eventually realized that it was actually quite the opposite. He and many other people have told me that I have a certain calmness about me that surprises them, and I have a kindness that they don’t expect.

Dad said that If I was the bad thing that the demonic dog was foretelling, he’d hate to see me if I was good. It’s a common joke with us now! Although when I was little, he avoided me a lot due to his experience mainly because, as he’ll admit this now, he feared me a little bit, because of what he thought I might bring.

Nobody else in my family has ever seen a black dog with red eyes, before or after that night.

“Black dogs with red eyes have a history of being demons and being associated with the devil, such as hellhounds. They are mostly believed to be evil, and represent death. Although, some are believed to protect the dead, so I don’t think that all of them are necessarily bad.The black dog with red eyes in this story might have just been protecting the burial, just like the Indian grim reaper was at the same house in the story, “Indian Grim Reaper” earlier in this book!”
