The House On South Street

The House On South Street

Emily stood wide eyed, opposite her was a vacant block of land. With a stunned expression on her face she whispered, " Where's the God damned house." She rubbed her eyes in disbelief and then blinked a few times willing for it to suddenly appear. South Street had always been included in her morning run and today had been no exception, except for the fact that yesterday there had been a house standing in its usual position. She thought back to a time two months earlier where Mrs Cartier had sweetly called out to her with the usual wave as she hosed her lovely red roses. She had planted them behind the worn picket fence that secured the yard. Today however, Emily couldn't smell their scent and wandered what the hell was going on. She felt numb, remembering the moment she had been told Mrs Cartier had passed away. She missed their daily chats but still enjoyed looking at the beautiful house that brought attention to the whole street. She had never seen a for sale sign or any evidence that it was going to be demolished.
Emily made her way across the road and peered over the fence. The roses were no where in sight. She did however notice Β that there was a coverage of green grass that sat in place of the house.Β  Emily had an eerie feeling and said, "this is just too weird." She opened the small gate that lead into the yard and slowly walked across to where the house used to sit. As she peered down at the vacant spot, she noticed a lone red rose, still attached to its stem. Emily bent down and breathed in the rich fragrance. It was then that she remembered the last words Mrs Cartier had said to her. "Emily, this will always be my house and nobody will replace me, if I could I'd take the darn thing with me." Emily then smiled and pulled out the rose that had been waiting for her then silently whispered, "God bless you Mrs Cartier."

Interesting. Paranormal and yet... sweet. The last wish of a Old lady coming true... or something else at play...

*insert dramatic movie strike*
