Damion, thanks for bringing back a treasure trove of memories. I grew up in rural western Wisconsin. I milked cows for a neighbor all through high school. Our family farm, had primarily hogs and chickens. Because dairy cattle must be kept in more sterile conditions, the before mention are never kept in a mixed environment.
Based on life experience I have mixed views on animal welfare and agriculture that cannot be easily defined. Though I believe animals are indeed here on earth for our exploitation, I can't believe how removed humanity has become from the process
The current way livestock are raised, is horrific. Note; farming has changed dramatically since I was young.
Listed are a few changes.
Dairy herds use to number anywhere between 50-80 head. It was rare, to hear of a heard over 100. In a world of corporate farming, dairy herds now number in the thousands. And the family farmers have been virtually driven off.
When I was young, every dairy farmer knew his cow by name. In fact, they were quite endeared to them. I know, because I saw more than one farmer cry, when one of his cows had to be put down.
Now, all cows are just a number, that’s tagged on their ear. When cows don’t produce, or have passed a certain age, or if the market prices for milk drop below what the corporations expect, the cows will be ‘purple tagged,’ which means they’ll be shipped for meat.
I talk too much. On this subject I could talk forever. But I’ll leave you with somethings you probably won’t hear from other sources.
Before the agricultural incorporation of America, and the chemical processing of meat. Dairy cattle were seldom consumed by humans. If I served you a steak made of dairy cow, it would be too tough for you to chew. Today, the biggest market for aging dairy cattle, is fast food restaurants like McDonalds, that treat the meat with ammonia and nitrates; Pink Slime. They say it’s safe, I say it’s Soylent Green.
I’ll stop here. If I don’t, I’ll get going on the dangers of artificial insemination, and my views will get me banned from this site.
