A Love that Dare Not Speak its Name

 A Love that Dare Not Speak its Name

To profess a love that dare not speak its name
portends compassionβ€”one sad pedigree.
To cross such lines would thus surely inflame
thou darkest daemons there who wait for me.
Β
Β
β€˜Tis wiser, still, to mind my mortal mouth;
uncouth as thou might seem to think I am.
Dare Iβ€”for fear my soul is headed south,
as darkness washes over me; I'm damned.
Β
Β
But should I dare to speak of one so brave;
a gentle maiden whose sweet life I took.
I fear will wake her from her woodland graveβ€”
I’ll dare not care to take a wayward look.
Β
Β
"The gods be cursed," I whisper, β€œSweet Lenore?”…
…then hear the faintest scratching at my door.

Hey, Tony!
Thanks so much for your great comments and excellent review.
I was weened on EA Poe's poetry and prose since before I can remember. I also studied Poe extensively in college while working towards my Bachelor's Degree in creative arts & literature.
To me, Poe is the greatest classic Gothic American Poet of them all, along with Emily Dickinson, James Whitcomb Riley (Little Orphant Annie), and John Stone (author of American Gothic).
Love & Rockets to you too, my friend.
