An Ode to Tippy
You gave us such joy, our sweet, loving friend.
but now that your journey has come to an end
we bid you adieu —a fond fare thee well—
it’s breaking our hearts; the pain’s hard to quell.
Always so happy, your tail, how it wagged,
that tiny pot belly that wiggled and sagged.
Your breed, it was Dachshund, your heart was so pure.
How you would dance—you were oh, so demure!
Although you are gone now, sweet mem’ries remain.
Briny tears mingle with cool, driven rain.
The Rainbow Bridge beckoned, you had to cross.
We’ll ne'er forget you—how we mourn your loss.
Tippy, we’ll miss you; with heads bowed, we nod
for there’s a good reason D-O-G backwards spells GOD.
**One week ago today we lost our dachshund, Tippy, who we've had for fourteen years.
Some say it's silly, but our pets are more than just animals.
They are our beloved companions who love us unconditionally, despite our many flaws.
So long, Tip-tip.
We'll miss you...
~Dean

Until Cherie and I moved in together I never knew a dog..... didn't think I liked them because I was bitten twice as a boy.... but...... Her dog (Haven) is an Australian Shepard and has the coolest personality..... we've been friends since day one!! He sensed that I had an illness when I first met him and would follow behind me when I did stairs and etc....... But now that I'm doing better he doesn't do that any longer.... interesting how perceptive he is!!.......Cherie said she never saw him do that for anyone before.... anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say is ~ I agree with you.... They ARE much more than just animals....... and I can appreciate this well penned " Ode To Tippy" !!
What makes it even more interesting to me is that Tippy is my brother's name as well!! His full name is Tyrone Tippy Tipy Dieter Taylor!!...... weird Huh?..... So sorry for your loss my friend!!....... Have a blessed day Dean!!....... and thanx for sharing this!!........ Peace.......T xo
Thank you for reading and for your compassionate comments, Tony.
Australian Shepherds are listed by the American Kennel Club as one of the most intelligent dog breeds there are.
Very smart and easy to train.
And yes, dogs (especially) are keenly attuned to our moods, illnesses and the like. It's one of the primary reasons they're called "Man's best friend."
Take care, my friend.
Happy Easter to you and Cherie.

Hello Dean,
powerful and heartfelt poem . What impressed me about this poem was the juxtaposition of happiness and sadness of having and losing a dog. I can relate.
I also have a 14 year old blond Labrador. It's only a matter of days , months.. i don't even want to think about it.
Losing a soul mate is a loss of oneself.
He's in good hands.
Happy Good Friday
Those who have had canine companions–either as children, or now, as adults, seem to understand, Leah. They are far more to us the animals. They become beloved members of our families. They are, in many cases, our very best friends and most attentive confidants.
Tippy had such a HUGE heart and she was so full of life. It was hard to believe she took a turn for the worse so quickly.
I appreciate you reading and your kind, compassionate words of support as well.
Happy Easter to you and yours.

Dearest friend Dean
when I was a child I had a beagle chihuahua mix. So intelligent, (he drove my mom up the wall lol.)when a neighbor came to visit he go outside and that winter he was lost. We never found him. his name was Fritzi. I missed him so much I never had another dog. I have two cats now and just talking about my dog makes me so melancholy. I am so sorry for your loss.
with Deepest sympathy

Hey, Lisa. As always thanks so much for reading.
People who've owned dogs–either as kids, or now, as adults–seem to understand. They are far more to us than mere animals.
They become beloved members of our families. They are, in many cases, our very best friends.
Tippy had such a HUGE heart and was so full of life.
It's still difficult to believe she took a turn for the worst as fast as she did. One day she was fine, the next she was in an unresponsive coma.
I appreciate you and your kind, compassionate words of support.
Happy Easter to you and your family.

Is Tippy the same pooch I seen on so man pictures? Well, you got my like, then some. DOG - GOD. Never noticed that aspect. One week ago, did not know. If there is a dog gone heaven,Tippy will be there waiting for his master to return. You can betcha that. Dogs are loyal, obedient, and pals forever. Humans could sure learn from animals but they they're far superior. They slaughter the animals, kill the trees that give off oxygen, pollute the atmosphere with toxic gases. As human species record shows, man is not capable of being n charge of a planet.Their greed destroys everything in its wake. We slowly kil ourselves in so many tangible ways. Rest in peace ~ Tippy. BOO!
Yeah, Tippy's pictures are all over my daughter's Facebook pages, Boo.
We got her when she was just six weeks old along with her brother from the same litter, Frank E. Furter.
The last few years she's lived with Chelsea, my daughter, because she was Chelsea's dog anyway. She babied that dog, but Tippy had such a good heart it was hard not to.
Thanks for reading and for your words of comfort.
We all sure miss her.
Have a Happy Easter, buddy.

My Dear Dean,
This beautiful tribute to Tippy has brought tears to my heart and Soul.
No one understands better than me, the tremendous pain that we suffer when one of our beloved little Soulmates has to leave us. It has long been a major bone of contention, that dogs are probably the most loved animals on the Planet, yet, were given such a short longevity. It irks me, that an elephant can live to be seventy-five, and some turtles live for two or three centuries, while our precious puppies rarely are with us for more than fifteen years. Such an inequity!
In the Fall of 2001, while I was on an extended road trip, Linda called me, and said she had just come back from a Bichon Friese breeder, and had seen the most beautiful puppy ever. Since she had been a breeder once of German Shepherds, and been around dog shows for many years, I thought that was very special. At the time, we had no dog, having lost her Beloved Nicky, fourteen months after we met. I was not sure if I even wanted another one, enjoying the freedom we had. But, the passion she had for this little puppy, convinced me to accede to her needs. I still remember my trepidation upon entering the front door, not knowing what to expect, when all of a sudden, this little white Dervish came flying at me, as I bent down to pick him up, and with one kiss, it was love at first sight. Then, sixteen months later, we went back to his breeder to get him a little brother. His mother had given birth to a litter of seven, which were now ready to be placed in loving homes. We watched with tears of joy in our eyes, as Nico followed his mother everywhere, one of the most beautiful sights we had ever seen. Of the seven puppies, there was one male who was running from sibling to sibling, gently attacking them. We decided immediately that he was the perfect brother for our Alpha little boy, Nico. As Nico was named for Linda's dear Nicky, we named our new little Soulmate "Cody", an extension of Nico's name. They loved each other from the moment they met, and for almost twelve years, were inseparable. We lost our dear Nico over three years ago, and our dear Cody 239 days ago (yes, I've been counting the days he's been gone, for after Nicos loss, he and I bonded closer than we had ever been, him being the object of my total affection) .
I cry for them both every day, with what I call, "The Tears of Eternity".
I have just published a poem dedicated to you, called "Tears For Tip-tip".
My wife and I send you our heartfelt condolences on your deepest loss.
All our love,
Linda and Larry xxx
As I write my little Rosie’s asleep on my lap. She’s a four year old Corgi Beagle mix.
never had a dog before. Bought Rosie when I retired in 2014.
Thanks to our long walks together I lost 50lbs. Thank you Rosie.
When people in the past told me their dogs where part of the family I’d think come on it’s just a dog. Well I know better now. Our Rosie IS part of our Family.
Im sorry for your lose!
I'm happy to hear you too have a canine companion yourself, JG.
It's not until you experience the unconditional love a dog gives you that you really understand how much a part of your family they become.
I am deeply grateful for your thoughtful and compassionate reply.
Best wishes,
~Dean ?
This is a moving piece that touches the hearts of anyone who has ever lost a pet. It’s a beautifully written piece that you can tell was very important to the writer. By writing this poem, you honor Tippy’s memory. I understand the immense pain this must have caused. I know this comment may be a bit late, but I hope it still carries the same meaning. I’m sorry for your loss. I know that Tippy will be waiting for you in heaven.
