BIRD OF SORROW

BIRD OF SORROW

A little bird of sorrow
Landed on my shoulder
Her heaviness pressed upon me
Till I felt some twenty years older
She stared at me with her beady eyes
She chatted in my ear
Goading and taunting me
Before she'd disappear
She'd conjure up fresh images
From a disturbing and painful past
Her dark, oppressive clouds would form
Inflicting pain at last
I opened up my window, wide
I tried to shoo her away
But she dug into my shoulder
Coloring my world, in shades of grey
Where's my blue bird of happiness
Has sorrow chased you away?
I guess I'll hide beneath my blankets
And just call it a day
