Boats Against the Current

~~I’ve never truly understood
The distinction between
Love, fondness and affection:
I’ll think I’ll know but on reflection…
Are they on a continuum
Or different shades of feeling?
Just when you think you know
The past is receding.
An affectionate present
Gives way to memories and photographs:
Captured poses and smiles
Clothes and hairstyles
Fond memories
Of parties and pubs
Recalling meeting of friends
At gatherings and clubs
These retrospections become ever further away
As lives diverge or entwine to
fulfil fertilities:
The seed then sown
For parental responsibilities
Times moving forward to
A fresh new tomorrow.
Leaving faces remembered
Recollections tender
Then
Turned heads
And closed doors.
