Buffalo Angel

Buffalo Angel

A beautiful woman dressed in white and feathers of finery

Lay across her bosom so mystical and gentle her eyes

Her hair black as coal with glimmer in each strand in the breeze

A beastly steamy hot summer the suns rays beat down, the people starving

A tribe without hunt, no game, Lakota Sioux people, no food for strength

Campers went to hunt the lands among the mountains

The path of the Black Hills of South Dakota they trailed afar

Suddenly this buffalo angel appears and said "Return to your people"

"And tell them I am coming" this holy woman presented the campers with

A sacred pipe and taught them that all things be connected, you must believe

Buffalo angel prayed with them and they learned the proper paths of the earth

One night she would be leaving, she rolled upon the earth four times

As she did her colors changed each time, until finally she magically turned

To a white calf, then she disappeared into the wind, you could hear sounds of wind chimes

Now looking around, great herds of buffalo could be seen surrounding the camps

No longer starving but now a new beginning a sacred life of abundance

As the natives honored this pipe and the buffalo plenty into the lands

They stood strong, clothed the women and children, and strengthened the old and sick

Buffalo angel fly into the heavens of peace, with the grace of the earth and sky

We will meet you someday, we thank you for your prayers, the feast upon our tables

We honor and respect the white buffalo, he who is blessed and your eyes upon us

Be with us in the mountains and the valleys of your protector and your gift

Buffalo Angel we stand beside you with the wind beneath our feet

As we dance together with our hearts and feet to the drumming in our mind

We will climb into the heavens of our great herds of buffalo our blessed friend

Thanks to you great one of the heavens and earth for many tribes be fed

By the grace of your hand and the honorable pipe we connected in body

And in mind and spirit for all time
