Chess

Bishop to c4.
That was it, king pinned down
And nothing left to do.
Then up with the queen,
With her royal crown
And down went the protector.
There he was, unveiled and bare
A king; now a peasant.
It was sweet for a moment,
I hadn’t noticed that black night
Atop his horse like death
Ready to swoop and take my queen
And that was that.
She was slain with ease.
My trembling hands slammed
The screen that folded the laptop
Like a worn-out book.
I was so sure that I had won.
A thousand hornets in my hand,
The sound of the knights cruel, laughing mock,
The sting and the buzz of an angry phone.
And there like my queen, vulnerable; alone,
She said we need to talk.
