A Chicken's Day

I’m too stupid not to peck
What’s that red thing I see?
It is small, a tiny speck
Is it anything good to eat?

A shadow flits across the ground
Quick!  Run for your lives!
Flap and squawk and run around
Make a row!  We must survive

Yummy!  Look!  I found a prize
A muddy puddle of sandy rain
Drink it up!  Drain it dry!
Don’t be shy, don’t restrain

Oh no!  It’s time to sleep
Where’s the coop door gone?
Ah, there it is, oh, relief
I’ll be up before the dawn
