From care to where?

This piece focuses on the worries of young people who leave the care of local authority and wonder where they will go after 18

From care to where?

From care to whereĀ
Where will I go?Ā
That’s for me to find outĀ
Not for me to knowĀ
ā€œYou’re an adult now, nearly 18ā€
ā€Be prepared as real world is not what it seemsā€Ā

Think about your career, tenancy and taxesĀ
Think of how you’ll tackle dire circumstancesĀ
Therapy will cost and we don’t have the fundingĀ
But someone will be there to help youĀ
Come Monday morning
Then six weeks after that
So you should be okayĀ
Our offices are open, but not on Fridays

From care to where?Ā
Where will I be?Ā
Am I another statistic?
Another case study?
Another tragic story to raise awareness about?
Riddled with anxiety, unable to leave the house?

I could end up in prisonĀ
Or sleep on the streetĀ
Will I afford the shoes on my feet?
Will I heal or fall off track?
Will my co-operate parents take me back?Ā

If I struggle to cope or lose or hope
Surely they’ll interfere if I start smoking dopeĀ
Because then I’ll be an ASBO childĀ
Get in some troubleĀ
At least then I’ll be noticedĀ
Not left in the rubbleĀ

Will I meet a good partner?
Or seek anyone at all
Domestic violence or notĀ
It’s someone to callĀ
What if I get evictedĀ
ā€˜Cos I don’t know what I’m doingĀ
I am biting off more than I am chewingĀ

I’m only 17, not long left schoolĀ
I just don’t feel equipped with the right tools
People make decisions about my lifeĀ
They sit round a table and discuss my strifeĀ
They ask for my input and thinks it’s nice that I’ve engagedĀ
But social services decide my fateĀ

From care to where
A bedsit in the cityĀ
From a group homeĀ
To the nitty and grittyĀ
The transitions too strongĀ
I don’t know where I belongĀ
Local authority have got me all wrongĀ

It’s not my social workers faultĀ
They’ve got 30 odd casesĀ
I’m surprised they can match names to their young peoples faces
Up to their eyeballs in paperwork
Cant build a rapportĀ
I’m a human beingĀ
Not another chore

From care to where?Ā
Where will I be?Ā
Let me know IROĀ
Its not up to meĀ
