I Saw You

I Saw You

I saw you last night in the silent hours,
In that part of the mind where dreams devour
All sense of reality. The moon idled aheadΒ
Through the myriad of stars in the dark;
And I wondered how you did, holding court with the dead,
As I felt you drift in through the depths of my heart.

I saw you today in the midday sun
As I walked the paths where my tears can run.
I called out to you, to get you to turn,
Hoping it really was you who'd popped by;
Then I wondered how it was I could not discern
The dead from the living, the truth from a lie.

I see you sometimes as memories play
Their games and tricks in the lightΒ  of the day.
I hear your voice weaving softly through the twilight,
upwards and onwards and all round the stars
And I wonder how it is you are gone from my sight
I can feel you so close yet gone are you β€” far.

How bold the dreams brought forth from breath.
How strange this final thing called death.
