Poem -

John and Frances

John and Frances

He compared you to the brightest star;
His love for you steadfast and strong.
And though he travelled wide and far,
There was nowhere else that he belonged.
Only your arms brought him comfort;
Your smile a bounteous gift bestowed.
Your likeness framed where he did sit,
In his lonely home from home abode.
You wrote him often - he did receive,
But your letters remained untouched.
For how was he to find reprieve
If he let himself be loved?
His life had been unjustly cruel -
Now he had to leave his heart.
All he wanted was to be with you,
But you were forced to be apart.
So that he may extend his life,
Warmer climates were advised.
You had sworn that you would be his wife,
And you would never leave his side.
But sadly this was not to be -
He told you to let go.
He only tried to set you free,
Though he loved you, heart and soul.
He had a choice - stay and die,
Or go and still be here.
It's because of love he had to try
To face his biggest fear.
All his days turned into nights;
His world had been dissected.
This choice was meant to set you free,
Whilst he could stay connected.
For whilst you breathed each other's air,
And shared the same blue sky:
He could imagine you together,
But you could go on with your life.
He didn't want to hinder you -
He wanted you to flourish.
But when he left your grief outgrew
Everything you ever cherished.
So in the end your life was damaged;
He died of broken heart.
For years your soul was ravaged,
Because you couldn't bear to part.
All the letters that you wrote your love,
Felt kiss of flame in fires shrine.
But now he watches from above,
And reads the letters in your mind.
