Lucky Linda In The Fifth

Lucky Linda In The Fifth

This tale again is about Roger and me, in early summer of nineteen sixty-two;

We had our high school diplomas in our hands, and were headed toward OSU!

There was a place where we used to go to, where trotters would race on a track;

We’d bet on them and usually would lose, but a few days later, we’d always go back!

It wasn’t only the horses we went there to see, for “hot girl trainers” would be in the stands;

We’d smile their way and if they smiled back, we’d ask if they’d like to hold hands!

It just so happened, not far from the track, less than one and a half miles away;

Rogers’ Father owned a nice little motel, where a lot of the jockeys would stay!

A particular one who had not done real well, and was having a terrible meet;

He was running late paying his bill, said Rogers’ Dad “pay me when you get on your feet”!

One day in the morning he told him “thanks Maury”, I appreciate all that you’ve done;

Bet on me tonight, “Lucky Linda in the Fifth”, she’ll go off at twenty to one!

Once in a while the fix will be on, and this one was a lock guarantee;

So Roger, his Father, his friend and myself, went there to win a boatload of money!

Roger and I each bet $4.00 to win, his Father bet much more than that;

If “Lucky Linda” won, we’d all make much cash,we’d be in the “city of fat”!

It rained that night and they ran in the mud, we all held our nerve bundled breaths;

But sure enough, she beat all the rest, and won by at least twenty steps!

Roger and I won eighty apiece, a lot of money in those early days;

Then we decided the finest filly we’d met, was “Lucky Linda” whom we always would praise!

I loved this one, it had me smiling. What would $80 of that day be worth now then?? I imagine it will be quite a bit! Well done on this one and to think the name Linda is a very lucky name for you isn`t it? and `our` Linda is much more beautiful too.

I love ya`s

Our Dear G,

That's for sure!  $80 back then is probably closer to like $1,000 now.  It also is crazy that the horse that brought me so much luck, was also named Linda.  Of course, my Linda has a much prettier face, but her horses tail isn't quite as long as Lucky Linda's was.

We love you,

Linda, Larry and Little Cody
