The Mask

Have you ever felt that you don't belong?
Like you were born in the wrong household,
Around the wrong people?

Sometimes that happens,
But what do you do?
Try your hardest to fit a different mold?
To try to fit in?
Do you show your true colors and get hurt?

A better, easier, option comes,
You could hide inside,
Numb but alive,
Show nothing on the outside.

The pain they cause doesn't show through,
Hurtful words appear to roll off your shoulder,
When inside, you're hurt.

The mask helps you to cope with the difference.
The mask isn't you,
It doesn't belong to you,
But becomes you.

You are the mask,
And the mask is you.
