Mi Querida

Mi Querida

One Day, Awhile ago,
We were walking together around the school.
And, like always, we went under the fence,
and to the park next to it.
It was a public place, small but green,
where trees covered every inch of sky,
but, under which we would walk closely.
We had done this for many days.
Together, we were stopped by someone.
A little girl, crying on the ground.
Of course, she was the one to ask.
"Hey, are you alright?" The little girl looked up to her.
"No one is here to play with me. Mama told me to go play with others..."
She nodded and knelt in front of the girl.
"Would you like to play with us. We don't mind, do we?"
I paused, looking at her cautiously, before nodding.
The little girl piped up and showed us the ball she'd been holding.
"Fetch!" And she threw it to the other side of the field.
The girl had a good arm for a six-year-old.
Dutifully, I did as I was told, and fetched the ball.
I didn't know children had that much energy.
We played for a full thirty minutes like that before her arm got tired.
And then her eyes started sparkling again.
She pointed her stubby finger at me,
and declared imperiously,
"You must Kneel." I obeyed.
I heard her little feet moving,
and then stop as she scrambled up to sit on my shoulders.
I held onto her as she started to sway.
"Now," she began in her best princess voice, "Carry me to the other side."
I obeyed then as well, My partner watching with amused eyes.
She followed by my side, making sure the little girl didn't slip.
Not that she would've as I assured her.
She had just smiled at me with a serene expression.
"I know she won't." For some reason, I blushed.
An hour or so later, and the girl's mother came to retrieve her,
my aching back demanding me to sit down on the nearby bench.
The woman thanked us and headed on her way,
Stopping only to pick up the girl in her arms.
"Come Mi Querida, we must leave now."
The little girl looked back at me and smiled before waving.
I waved back, letting a tired smile cover my pain.
The little girl and her mother rounded the corner,
and I let out a sigh before sinking into the bench.
She sat beside me, wrapping my arm with hers.
She leaned on me, her head resting on my shoulder.
"Children are hard to keep up with, aren't they?" She nodded, smiling.
"You think she was bad, wait until it's ours." I blushed wildly,
and she just sat and laughed at my expression.
We talked about many things, but...
The future rarely came up like this.
Not that I minded, I realized.
I had genuinely enjoyed playing with the little girl.
She seemed to read that, seeing a smile break out over my face.
"I know they will be in good hands."
She laughed quietly to herself before looking at me with those eyes.
I don't know if I can describe the tranquility in her eyes then,
a calm assurance that made me roll her across the bench,
so that our noses almost touched.
"Because," I began, smiling, "They will have the best mother in the world."
She smiled then, her eyes lighting up with sunshine and joy.
"Of course." We stayed on that bench all day, just enjoying each others company,
talking about the future as we never had.
And if it had come to pass,
We would have lived happily ever after.
Because our futures were one and the same,
her and I,
That I knew as she stared into my eyes that day,
As if she'd made a decision.
As If I Had confirmed something she wanted to know.
I didn't know why It'd taken her that long.
I had decided the moment We'd fallen in love,
I would be with her until the end.
So that we might have so many beginnings,
new little lives of our own.
For us.

it's kind of funny Cherie. I was reading over my comment on your "Something missing in My eyes" Poem, when I saw that I had said "Mi querida" instead of "Ma Cherie". They mean the same thing, but it still made me laugh a bit. And, It made me remember this day. So, thank you for posting that.
