The Midnight Woods

As I sit upon this branch, so high, I look around, at flickering shades
Swift fights, of bears in a cave. What more, can I speculate?
The masked obscurities of the raccoon, as his family trails behind, to feast upon, a near field of corn
What next, should I elaborate?
The night crawler's squirming, underneath the mildew scorn
The possum, with his tail curled around, the tree trunk, adorn
As he eats, the eggs from the blue jay nest, hoping, he is all alone
I hear the creatures, crawling through the woods, the midnight call, the howl of the wolf
What begs upon this earth? Is it the fog? I can not see through
Though I listen for each step, the next, is one , I do not know, I am cautious, to see who
The crickets, they are mating, the locust throbbing throats, the bullfrogs keep croaking
Down this old pine tree, as I gloat, the next I see, a pair of eyes, looking up at me, I almost fly away
Now, I feel I am dreaming, I am seeing me, it is a breed, just like me, a great horned owl
In the midnight, blue moon, I hoot, and she hoots too, we two, are hooting, as we each react
I hope she knows I'm watching, in the midnight woods, I feel the stars shooting, my heart starts to ache
As now, I am flirting back, I guess I'll just keep watching, not stopping, until daybreak
