Ode to a Dog (For Chopper)

I’d heard you’d gone away my friend
I wish I knew where to
Even if you are asleep
I’d run to be with you
I fear you left the way you did
    Because you sensed the end
It seemed so odd the way you left
   Without your Roxie friend
I hope that if that’s why you left
  You found a peaceful place
Perhaps beneath a starry sky
  Or a dappled sunlit space
So even though I couldn’t say
Those things I’d say to you
And be there for your last moments
Just as good friends should do
I’d hold onto the thought that you
   Felt safe and happy there
Under the watch of the only eyes
Who truly knows how much I care
