A Peaceful Wilderness

As a child I would look up to the tallest pines
I would put my hand above my brows, to keep the sunlight out
I could see an eagles nest at the top of a mountain peak
In the farthest distance, the wild rabbit danced, jiggling his cotton tail around the ivy spray
Many times I would sing with the birds, the mocking bird, would mock me back
A peaceful wilderness, my grandfather would say, as he played his song on his flute
I would walk these grounds until I would find a trickling water stream, and I would take a drink
I would watch the hawks, and eagles soar by, as they would follow me
In the distance, the deer and fawn, would graze upon the berry bush, down a trail
Love, and faith, is found in each forest pine branch, each rock is etched with the blood of life
Rest your head dear grandfather, as I am standing by your grave, I still hear your whispers in the mountains
Echo to my wilderness friends, let the song of the hickory vine, whistle in the wind of time
Let us know peace within our native land
