Penny golden

Penny golden

I had a penny, golden
I worshipped, like a Crown
And no matter where I’d go
I could never put her down

I went to far distant places -Ā
To unfamiliar lands
And yet that penny, golden
Would still be in my hand

I’d polish her at midnight
Ensuring she would shine
For I knew that penny, golden
Had a grand design

She shone bright in the sunlight
In the shade was never dim
And if someone asked to see her
I could never let them in

For that penny, golden
Was mine, and mine alone
That penny, from a quarry
Was just a piece of stone

Yet to me she was, oh, so much more
Like a Castle to a King
My cherished penny, golden –
The sense that adulation brings.
