The Poet in Bronze
It has been a work in progress, the monument of a man and his love
He spoke for those who could not speak, the war years, the prairie years
His desire to be free in spirit and in words, the poet, Carl Sandburg
A worldly spirit who wrote of life, of city, of country, of people and touched us with song
A good ole boy, singing folk songs about living, his tales are written, his life never ends
Because he stands tall in the eye of the public, the poet in bronze
His life was active, with family, and a goat farm, just a country boy who grew up
His books under one arm and his guitar slung over his shoulder, hanging from his back
Come to Galesburg, Illinois and see where he bared his roots, where he was born, down a country road
Look up at his face in this city, with pride he once stepped each foot, and his story continues to be told
And remember his poems, of nature, of freedom, of the windy city of Chicago, a biography of Lincoln
The train cars he would ride, like a hobo, wanting to know how the other side lived
He lived to love, to know the meaning of time and place, I suggest you come and see him
Take a look at another wonderful writer, his history, his mystery, and his bronze face
The artist built this magnificent monument, now it will be a life long treasure in this city park on main street
In the heart of the land that he loved, and you will hear his words, if you listen, the spirit of a one of a kind
