Refrain! (advice to would-be poets in the form of a villanelle)

If you would write and fain to seek renown
And win the fickle crowd's cheap-bought acclaim
Refrain from writing repetitions down.
Hope not for long-lived glory or a crown
Like He who (in iambics) wrought the Dane
If you would feign to write and seek renown.
If you would gain acceptance in the town
Thereby avoiding laughter and disdain
Refrain from writing repetitions down.
Don't use such words asΒ hither, thither, 'zounds
Don't pen a pantoum, sonnet or a paean
If you would write and fain to seek renown.
If Fate has cast you as Erato's clown
(the sight of joyous couples causing pain)
Refrain from writing repetitions down.
Embrace the pace and blandness of Dan Brown
Thrust not upon the reader thoughtful strain
If you would feign to write and seek renown
Refrain from writing repetitions down.

Hey Jason very cool write , I do refrain from some words that I cannot say aloud . Lol a great piece . Rock
Thanks. Speaking of words you refrain from saying aloud; maybe you can clear something up for me?? I've noticed that a lot of people here use the word write as a noun, as you did there. Is that an American thing or merely peculiar to this site?? Either way...it sounds very strange to my delicate Irish ears!!
It as an American thing oh me of my , pass the guiness lol just slang for a good poem . I want to visit Ireland one day for sure . My heritage is from Scotland. Β Take care rockΒ
Thanks for that.
Personally, I prefer rum...but if you ever DO come to Ireland I'll gladly buy you a Guinness!
I thought only pirates drank rum Β but you are Irish lol just kidding . I like some vodka !!
What makes you think I'm NOT a pirate?!
Jason
