Roach
We live in a cold, heartless place-
Where people still die
for their race
Where people are denied the right to vote
because of their anatomy
below the waist
we live in a broken, lawless place
where justice is defined
by as another cold case
with crime dusted
in a layer of coke
inside jobs,Β
and corrupt waste.
We live in a primal, deviant place
but we wouldn't have it any other way-
where people are judged for being unchaste-
though there's sex in and on every post
another murder,
another silenced rape
and we love every sight, and smell
and we love every taste
we live in a rough, tough place
where men hold power and women hold grace
where many of us are scared to elope
because of bigotryΒ
and public displays of hate
we live in a violent place
where we are desensitized at a young age
like how a toddler steps on a roach
and looks up to mother
with childlike wonderΒ
and says
"look, mom- I killed something today."

You capture well the harsh reality and struggles in life for some. It is a cold reminder of how in some ways we accept and still let this happen. I admire how you thoughtfully capture from a young age we are desensitized and devalue even the smallest of life forms.Β If we are truly advanced and civilised as we like to thinkΒ it should not be like this. Things are improving but we still have a long way to go.

Thank you so much! I appreciate your support. I have a couple other poems you might like- Burnt Carbon is about the desolation of inner cities in the 70s- dealing with welfare, murder, drugs, and everything that basically deteriorated the city. Also- my first version of that poem is here too- and it's more about personal struggle. Thank you so much, man.Β
