Poem -

Saying Goodbye

Saying Goodbye

Tears,

lots of tears,

uncontrollable tears,

my tears.

Saying goodbye has never been this hard,

because when I say goodbye,

I always come back,

eventually.

Not this time.

As far as I know,

this is it.

As much as I want to stay,

I can’t.

Even though my heart aches,

I must leave.

Maybe this is for the best,

even though this doesn’t seem like the best.

In the distance,

I hear a car sputter to life,

then a honk,

a cue.

One last time I look at you.

I want every detail etched into my brain.

I turn to leave.

I hear you calling,

yearning for me to come back,

but I can’t.

As I drive away,

I don’t look back.

Instead,

I close my eyes,

and picture the life ahead of me.

Slowly,

a tear tumbles down my cheek.
