The lessons learned late in life
Are those that sharpen you like a knife
And while he retains some optimism
To be alone is his decision.
And while he watches others flirt with grace
There are some things you simply cannot replace.

Some things can't be replaced and lessons can certainly cut like a knife...

But, even those types of wounds can heal and how fast depends if it's left untreated or taken care of...
