raised in silence  
thoughts were  
never to be voiced  
disturbing visions  
to be seen  
consistent screams  
were heard  
tears became lullabies  
as cries were absurd  

mom,  
loved  
alcohol & men  
dad,  
I never knew  
grandparents,  
kept me in church  
and always recited  
the golden rule  

escape became  
my focus  
as smiles  
were always worn  
pressure consumed  
perfection expected  
as words,  
cut, slammed  
and torn  

strict religion  
was the center  
man was made superior  
turmoil resides within  
false words spoken  
as flesh & heart  
were ripped & broken  
the witnessing  
of porn & lust  
will forever cage my  
heart &  
break my trust  

years went by  
determination  
became my strength  
independence  
was a must  
breaking free  
from unfortunate  
circumstance  
reciting positive words  
within  
to forever be a victor  
& never a victim  

the darkness  
that reigned  
for many years,  
soon became  
my sunlight  
a hurting heart  
for the broken  
a deep love  
for the lost  
positivity, was a must  
whatever the cost  

a voice  
of encouragement  
hope  
forever to remain  
within  
always daring to dream  
and never  
to give in
