Loved it, my friend! It's sad, but it's also so telling of the wonderful nature of animals, and particularly dogs. I'm a huge dog person(not a huge person, but huge fan of dogs), and often(but don't tell any people I said this), I say that they're so much better than people to be around. 
Really enjoyed your write.

A lovely poem, with such a sad ending.  Of course, as we know, poor dogs were not given long enough lives.
By the way, I dated a "Honky Tonk Woman" from Kentucky once, but she was certainly no dog.
