Time Behind Bars

Time Behind Bars

"Mummy, when is daddy coming home?"
"Soon baby"
The cold words my child says again and again
While I know her daddy is locked up in the pen
Late nights
When she's running to the door
Thinking her daddy is finally home
Only to see the cold fucked up roads her daddy thought he owned
See you're a dad doing 10 years
All because of these cold roads
Your baby girl will be grown by the time you see daylight
And you would have missed out on most of her life
Just because you couldn't let go of these cold roads-

These cold roads wouldn't love you like we do
Wouldn't care for you like we do
If a bullet was put straight through your head
It's your baby girl that will be running to your hospital bed
You know what you were getting yourself into when you had a child at 22
And it hurts me too
To see my child without a father figure like the other kids will do

Repping these ends
It's a social decision you chose to do
But a baby is something that God has chosen for you
She was given to us for a purpose
To keep away from all the mandem that were lurking
She has the same eyes and complexion as you
Everytime I look at her
I see an inner you
The inner you I fell in love with...

When she's abit older
You better know what to say to explain all of this
As far as she's concerned
When we come to visit
She think she's going on a day trip
You should see how excited she gets
You definitely will be proud
Yet because of the mess you caused now
You wouldn't get to see her eyes light up when she walks out of the door

Daddy's little princess from birth until death
She vowed to always have your back
Unlike the rest
She's your true rider
She deserves nothing but the best

Getting patted down by police from early
EVERY WEEK
Just to see you and get her daddy's kiss upon her cheek
While I hold you down
But how many of the mandem came down this month to visit you now?
Babe
It's easy for them to say "Free up my guy" from the outside and then go about their care free lives,
But you got bigger things to be caring for
Just turn around and look at your daughter's smile

So by the time you get out
We will be waiting to put back your crown
But these cold roads are only for man that are on 100
Who are ready to do life for the roads or die trying
So babe try to understand
You got a home to look after
So next time when our daughter asks:
"Mummy, when is daddy coming home?"
I can say, "Quarter to nine baby, go wait for him at the door."

heartfelt, we aren't the only ones who suffer the consequences of our decisions more people should try to understand that.

Most definitely.
We do forget the impact of own choices on our loved ones. it's a motivational message to help people think twice about what they are about to do, to be honest.

Welcome to Cosmo, Tina Tori.
Raw, genuine and real...
This is the type of poetic narrative that could only be written by someone who has "been there, done that."
As parents, we are responsible not only for our actions but for the impact our choices have on our children and loved ones as well.
Well penned, albeit quite sad.

Great Write.  I was a Lieutenant in the prison system.  Unfortunately this story is too familiar.  It is unfortunate though that the Daddy's imprison are running criminal activity in and out of the gate.  The manipulate their families making think they are going to change.  It is sad and the story rarely has a happy ending....

Thank you very much; it’s so sad that people don’t always get the happy ending they want.

Congratulations Tina, well done, I'm sure this was very difficult to write, a lot of thought put into it.
