Unknown & Unforgotten

Fiery tempers rise, inevitable as the sun,
Be they soldier, warrior, or knight,
Feuds passed down from father to son,
Until the fallen rival the stars in the night.

Whether started by politician, king, or nun,
Sides are taken and flags are raised,
War is born, where before there was none,
Evil is born, while innocence is razed.

The victors celebrate, heaped with praise,
Heroes are created and fortunes are made,
Upon the less fortunate, anonymity preys,
As Mother Nature becomes a maid.

Battlefields seen as a test of mettle,
Truth becomes cloudy, a cloying mist,
Obfuscating the facts, historians meddle,
Yet, how many stories are missed?

Tales, unknown, never spoken aloud,
Unmarked graves for soldiers that never rose,
The brave and the cowardly, all are allowed,
Another tombstone added to the endless rows.

Outnumbered only by the countless mourning,
Necropolises eternal testament, a vigilant lesson,
Though they may not rise to see the morning,
Even in death, their sacrifice does not lessen.
