Daisy

Daisy

Just the opening sequence to a book I am currently working on, which involves a young girl named Daisy Renton, who has a stronger influence then she thinks.

“Liam, Liam, do something for gods sake, do something! Get them to move on, throw rocks at them, just do something!” Melissa sobbed whilst she paced up and down the hallway holding Daisy in her arms, gently bouncing her up and down. A dozen people were standing outside their kitchen window, peering inside their house as if they were searching for something valuable, then wondering off joining other crowds on the road. And on that road were hundreds and hundreds of unfamiliar and familiar faces.

“What am I supposed to do Mel? Tell them this is private property; it’s a public path.” Liam persisted turning his head round to Melissa with his hand leaning against the un-finished wall and turning back again to stare outside and figure out what to do. Liam was getting irritated with the matter; there was no logical reason for the sudden wave of audience outside his home.

“This isn’t right, they’ve been here for days Liam. They just stand there and talk, bang on our doors and windows for no reason. Why is our street suddenly the fucking capital?” Melissa exaggerated, she stormed through the hallway and retreated to her rocker and sobbed louder. She continued to bounce Daisy up and down to try and relax her as she wailed. Melissa was overwhelmed and exhausted. She looked out her patio door and noticed people peering over the fence, almost climbing over. She clambered her way to the patio door, banged on the glass and shouted,

“GO AWAY! Leave us alone!” Waving her spare arm about furiously. The strangers noticed the commotion and disappeared out of view.

“What’s happening?” She whispered with a track of tears slowly rolling down her naturally blushing cheek. Within that second, one droplet landed on Daisy’s lip and Melissa gently wiped it off with her forefinger and held her daughters face in her hand. Daisy seemed to quiver to an end with her crying and softly whimpered for a few seconds and opened her tiny eyes as much as she could. Her eyes were a perfect electric green. Melissa had never seen such a mesmerizing colour before in her life and her daughter was blessed with it. Melissa broke out into a smile and giggled admiring her beautiful baby girl. She stroked her daughter’s cheek with her thumb. Daisy seemed finally at ease and it was like Melissa had shed her skin, she was instantly relaxed and overjoyed.

Liam strolled into the living room to stop and freeze frame the moment of her wife and child bonding surrounded by low sunlight. Despite sudden and loud knocking on their door and people banging on their kitchen window, an instant wave of relief crashed over Liam and whatever worry he carried, had vanished. All that mattered in the world was his Daisy. He slowly made his way over to them and wrapped his arms around Melissa’s waist and kissed the back of her hair and placed his chin on her left shoulder in perfect viewing shot of his daughter’s face.

“Can’t believe how lucky I am.” He sighed into her neck causing Melissa to shiver with pleasure.

            “Our little Daisy.”

Both Liam and Melissa stood perfectly still in bliss, as the ever growing crowd of people wonder up and down the street of Winston Way demanding entrance to their home.
