Alcohol Spiral

Alcohol Spiral

He was a father of two who had worked all his life
Six days a week were filled with labour and strife,
Then the seventh he'd go see his son's rugby game
There was no rest for him and each week was the same.

He was popular and had a great many friends
He harnessed all of his energy into the work he depends,
Since high school he'd settled right into his job
Instead of staying home and becoming a slob.

Although he may seem like the model dad
He did have some vices, one of which was pretty bad,
He'd drink on the weekends and most evenings too
Although he seemed to be happy that just wasn't true.

Its that same old routine that would have this effect
Some thing in him wanted more which filled him with regret,
With his wife by his side, she would like a drink too
Until drink became an obstacle he could not get through.

With drink his inner sadness started to surface
Which turned into violence and outer disgrace,
When he started to shout and fight with his wife
And in a moment of insanity pulled out a knife.

The police were called as the tension arose
And they locked him in a cell that night as it goes,
Then he wasn't allowed back to his old home
Or to see his two sons, now he was all alone.

The doctors prescribed anti-depressants for him
But the only place for them was straight in the bin,
For they only made things worse and were not the solution
To mask such inner pain was not the best retribution.

Then one day when the counselling didn't end well
He heard voices in his head like the demons of hell,
And they taunted him and kicked him when he was down
And the word got out about him around town.

He grabbed his car keys and decided to drive
Considering if he would come back alive,
He found a large wall and he started to speed
Determined to end all the pain and be freed.

Then when he took a breath and time slowed right down
He envisioned his sons and family gathering round,
In front of a black coffin they stood in the rain
With tears on their faces, trying to mask the pain.

Then he realised he had something more to give
That there still were two beautiful reasons to live,
He decided he was being selfish to leave
His sons and their mother in sadness to grieve.

He wanted to set an example from then
That he would find the will to never drink again,
The car slowed right down as he eased off the gas
Then he took a deep breath for that moment had passed.

Now if you could see him, that father today
You would see quite a difference now everything's okay,
There's a sober hero with a new lease of life
Who realised just in time how much he loved his sons and wife.
