Althea Lane

The house on the hill
The one all boarded up
With cobwebs in the gate
The one that stares at you as you walk by
An old woman lived there
many years ago
With twenty cats and
Thirty bats
A half dozen fat and happy rats too
This lady did not smile
She always wore a grown
If you ever saw her she wore a battered wedding
Gown
They say she never married
That her betrothed died at war
But she refused to give up on him
Would put her dress on
Every year
At last the sadness got her
For she became quite mad
Cutting up all the flowers in all her neighbors yards
Some say it was to punish
Some say it was insane
Some would just shake their head and gently say her name
Althea sweetheart stop
Your grieving so
It is life still some to live
The lad would not want
You to be affected so
Althea Lane they called
Her
And last year she passed away
Now they named the street for her
So forever it shall be
The saddest street in history
The one called Althea Lane
