Circle of grief

Circle of grief

Children gathered
standing side by side
holding hands
forming a circle
a mile wide.
Eyes blended
as the sun
reflected
upon a sea
of translucent
white crosses.
Lowered eyes
prayers spoken
under cloudy skies
the children whispered
here is where
my daddy
lies.

Mothers wiped their tears
trying to hide
their future fears,
holding a flag
in their hand
hearts sinking
in quicksand
clutching,
a dog tag.

Mother and child wept
a picture and memory kept
prayed his soul be saved
as they stood,
by the grave
and waved.

Mother and child
hand in hand
leading,
the military band
inside
a numbness prevailed
their lives,
now derailed.

Gunshots in salute
echoed in the air
his passing,
now absolute.
Mother and child
walked on alone
silently,
into the unknown.
