Poem -

Dark august days

an Englishman's lament

Dark august days

ye dark august days of rain
beg of summers sunshine ripening
where bist whence i needy be?
life has not warmth for me
away then

to favourite places ye shall not know
where love took me and was gone
in tall grass where shadows dwell
were written dreams of never die
time and again

somewhere in haunted place of love
I return to you beloved cotswolds
feel your amber coarseness touch
through birdsong, laughter and sigh
how little changes

over sensual rolling hills desire
through millstone gate and ford
i am freed upon thy natures lust
though you mock me now with youth
as once I mocked of thee
