Echo to Narcissus
How clearly the river leaps to kiss your glorious pout!
My own tears also spring to offer you clean taste of honor.
My call falls unheard; Your lithe arms stir
only to embrace your own silent reflection.
Look within my palmed pools of love swelling, I beg;
Immerse and ripple in self-admiration there,
so I might at least bear your precious face in my hands.
Long moan, tightly stretched moments of longing,
generous garlands I extend in gentle clutches of hope.
I have soaked your skin with bleeding roses
swiftly strewn in throes of vibrant passion.
Heated flesh twitches e’er within silk fold and stone crevice fast.
Yet my submissive heart is ne’er once seized
by one whose brow is so bound in Narcissus blooms.
So fragrant petals drop from lust’s alluring, burning vines grasped
Into shadows of fatigue which ring my dreamless eyes.
No appreciative smile from my god on opposite bank,
close enough to touch intimately, yet so removed from my yearnings.
One more secret to echo across a fading world in sad sighs.

Gosh! Thank you, my friend!
Beautiful
thans, :)
I've loved this story since my youth, and you've given it justice. Poets underestimate the educational value of their poetry. To a student, studying the classics, your work would be instrumental in helping them understand the beauty of a Greek tragedy.
Thanks, Kimmy/Snugglebuck. That's very kind of you to say. I had a relationship with a Narcissus, and that personal pain is what wrought this poem, moreso than the Greek story. But yes, mythology is still a strong inspiration for me, and I've loved the stories since I was a child also.
