Handspun Yarn

Handspun Yarn

Only one end of
this handspun yarn
I hold in my hand,
At times slackening,
Taught the others.
It feels sometimes,
the other end gave,
While at others it seems
My own grip threatens to tire.
Struggling to keep the line straight
Knots and tangles are inevitable.
Straighten here, tangles elsewhere;
Focus on one and the rest of it slips.
At times both ends pull too stubborn,
Others, the line dangles indifferently.
Smoothening the tangles and
Looking out for both ends,
A realization has dawned,
Knots on an unbroken yarn
Can always be undone, untangled
Together with patience and care.
But once the yarn breaks,
And the severed ends, retied.
That knot forever, remains.
If one’s wise and lucky,
then as a lesson, as a reminder,
If not,
then as a wound, as a scar.

Once again, you've taken a mundane object and quotidian task and morphed them into the perfectly rendered metaphor for something more meaningful. But not just superficially...you manage to use every aspect and tiny detail to give shading and depth to the metaphor; as evidenced by the above-quoted lines...the last image of which is a masterstroke.

Sambit, oftentimes when I read your poetry I think: "Damn it, this guy is good!!"
This is one of those times...

Bravo!

And am almost always rendered speechless by your ever-generous reviews of my words Jason! Shukriya so very much!

I had written this in Hindi about 7-8 years ago inspired by the image of my college friends from the textile design department spinning yarn and preparing their looms to weave. This is just a recent translation.

Shukriya again! :-)
