Poem -

Observing the young.

I see most young people having fun,
but no meaningful relationships with anyone,
I see a lot of young people with crazy hair,
wearing the latest fashion with no style or flair.

I see most young people staring at their smart phones,
texting and tweeting, having dinner with family in their homes,
I see many young people faking smiles and taking selfies,
but fail to capture a sunset thru orange blossom trees.

I see that young people binge watch their T.V shows,
usually on programs that cause the brain to decompose,
I see that young people enjoy diluted versions of life thru reality T.V,
with dreams of being a celebrity for many nobody wannabees.

I see countless young people spending their days on social media,
getting their education, holding a pocket sized encyclopedia,
I see that young people have a technological way to feel connected,
as the art of personal and intimate conversation is being neglected.

I see a lot of young people have no respect or value for money,
and the words of the old and wise seem rather funny,
I see countless young people getting a buzz on instant gratification,
some things are more rewarding with a little patience.

I see hordes of young people sharing their lives with the whole world,
discretion leads to mystery, and some things should be tightly furled,
I see many young people giving nothing to others and all to themselves,
but it takes time to consider others first before you think of yourself,

I see countless young people going off to college for a degree,
the penultimate step to adulthood, still young and carefree,
I see diverse young people have many versions of sexuality,
but they despise being labeled, preferring personal identity.

I see so many young people having a lackadaisical work ethic,
doing the least they can and not feeling guilty about the paycheck,
I see these same young people feeling entitled to promotion,
and fragile feelings are hurt, when they don't come under consideration.

I see all these young people and I shake my head,
so many feeling special, awkward or even neglected,
I see the young people who believe they are the greatest generation,
I see my younger self in them, I'm similar in lots of ways, just an older version.
