Sweet Nothing

Sweet Nothing

Sweet Nothing lived for ‘morrow
Plenty lived today
And when she saw him walking
Dressed in scarlet – she in gray

She’d whisper to the children
And fly above the sky
And flap her wings and shudder
And stay up past bed-time

She’d deplore the clouds with rain
So thunder felt distraught
And offer words with wisdom
And loosen what was taut

She was silent when he’d be talking
And forget her parasol
Yet laugh when he was sombre
And ride his carousel

And when his sun was tired
And his avenue deprived
‘Sweet Nothing’ felt redemption
and ‘Plenty’ felt contrite
