The Mosque

I visited a mosque:
I was with a friend
Who needed to pray
Since we’d finished
Our activities
And it was now that time
Of day.
Â
I followed him in;
There were spaces for
Hats and coats
And a side room for washing
He said that he’d be
About ten minutes
And that I was welcome
Â
To look around the prayer hall-
But please could I
Remove my shoes.
I did so and went in
And was struck at the
Patterned carpeted,
The windows with arches,
Â
A bookcase on the wall:
Just five men were there
(since it was not the main
Prayer time)
Two stood, three kneeled
All silently:Â Loose fitting clothes.
There was something
Â
Remarkably calming
And simple
About this:
Watching them pray to
A God who might
Or might not exist:
I make no judgement.
Â
It was soothing for the soul
(and that was for me
Just watching)
They could have talked-
But didn’t-
Choosing instead to
Surrender that
Â
Uniquely human ability.
Instead standing, kneeling,
Praying
Perhaps connecting to
The Earth
Acknowledging their
Vulnerability upon it.

Dear Michael,
He entered to another's church
And on the floor, they both did perch
He felt a calm, come over him
Was this a product of their Gods whim
Peace and Love,
