Sing for me

They fear me.
I can see it in their posture,
I notice it in the way their eyes flicker across the room,
Refusing to hold eye contact.
I have become an outsider to you,
This time? I no longer mind.
I notice how the silence lingers in between bursts of nervous chatter.
The empty comments, the distant looks,
The silent prayers that I would leave.
So I wonβt ask you to sing for me,
No, I wonβt have you invite me out of guilt. Yes I love you,
But my darling, too much has come to pass, She has dutifully filled the space in your heart where I once sat.
And dare I say,
You sing for her and she echoes your love,
She fills you more and more -
as the distance between us spills over the mountain tops and fills the woods.
So I wonβt ask you to sing for me as it is no longer my song.
You see, it was not the wolves that got us, nor the pain I felt that day,
It was a choice from both sides of the valley, that our song? No longer needed to play.
